ALLGÄU

The Allgäu is one of the most beautiful parts of Southern Germany where people love to spend their holidays enjoying an incredible “outdoor playground” with beautiful landscape, local tradition and customs, crisp clean air, and clear lakes and rivers. It stretches from the soft hills of the pre-alps to the more mountainous area with the higher peaks of the Allgäuer and Lechtaler Alps.

Famous for the royal palaces of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau built for the Bavarian King Ludwig and his parents near the historic cities Füssen and Kempten, the Allgäu mainly belongs to Bavarian Swabia, but has also a part which belongs to neighbouring Baden-Würthenberg. Kempten is the oldest urban settlement in Germany founded by the Celts and later taken over by the Romans, who gave it its Roman name “Cambodunum”.

The Austrian mountainous States of Tyrolia and Vorarlberg are also bordering the Allgäu. The “Allgäuer Cheese Road” with a length of approx. 220 km leads any Cheese Connoisseur through this wonderful alpine region famous for its century-old cheese recipes on his/her way from the Alps to the famous Lake Constance, nicknamed as the Swabian Sea. In the other direction, the German Alpine Road winds over 450 km from Lindau at the Lake Constance to Berchtesgaden at the Lake Königssee through the southern part of Bavaria passing also other parts of the Allgäu which are very well worth seeing.

FRANCONIA

Franconia is a region divided by the German states of Hesse, Thuringia, Bavaria and Baden-Würtenberg. The largest part of Franconia is in the north/northeast of Bavaria which includes the three provinces Upper, Middle and Lower Franconia. These names refer to the geographical situation in respect to the River Main. These three provinces meet in one point which is called the “Three Frankonians Rock” Some people also divide the region into “Beer” and “Wine” Franconia as both parts are equally famous for the beverages produced there. Nürnberg, in Middle Franconia, is world famous for its Christmas market the “Nuernberger Christkindls Markt”, the Gingerbread, and Christstollen.

SOUTH TYROL / ALTO ADIGE

South Tyrol, or Alto Adige in Italian, is an autonomous province in northern Italy with the capital city of Bolzano and the well know city of Merano. South Tyrol is located at the northernmost point of Italy. The province is bordered by Austria (Tyrol and Salzburg) to the east and north, and Switzerland in the west. Other Italian provinces border South Tyrol to the southeast, south, and southwest. Completely located in the Alps, the landscape is highly mountainous and alpine. Famous for the Dolomites and its highest peak the “Ortler” (3,905 m), South Tyrol is completely located in the Alps with an alpine and highly mountainous landscape. In between these high mountains are valleys located, which have the perfect climate to grow fruits and the famous South Tyrolian Wine. The valley area, with cold winters and warm summers, has the driest and sunniest climate in the province and is home to many famous vineyards and fruit producers. The “Etschtal” (Val d’Adige in Italian) is the valley which stretches from Merano to Bolzano, and especially the area around the Lake Kaltern (Largo di Caltaro) and other villages along the South Tyrolian Wine-Street, are all famous for the wines which are cultivated here. The South Tyrolian Cuisine (e.g. Schlutzkrapfen or Tyrolyan Speck) is similar to its Austrian counterpart but has also some Mediterranean influences from Italy and uses a lot of its own famous wine: Lagrein, Riesling, or Pinot Blanc, to name only a few.

TYROL

The state of Tyrol is separated into two parts. The larger area is called “Nordtirol” (North Tyrol) and the smaller part is called “Osttirol” (East Tyrol). With the neighbouring Austrian states of Salzburg in the east and Vorarlberg in the west, Tyrol is bordering the Italian autonomous province of South Tyrol in the South. Before World War I, South Tyrol was as well a part of the Austrian- Hungarian Empire of the Habsburgs. Also, Tyrol shares a border with Switzerland in the south and borders Bavaria in the north. The smaller part, East Tyrol, also shares its borders with the federal Austrian state of Carinthia in the east and Italy’s Province Veneto to the south. Tyrol’s highest mountain is the Großglockner (3797 Meters) which is part of the mountain rage “Hohe Tauern” at the border to Carinthia. Tyrol is famous for its alpine cuisine with various delicacies.

Vienna, the Austrian Capital, is with roughly 1.8 million people which makes it the largest city in Austria. Besides holding the title “City of Music” and being home to some of the world’s most famous composers, its rich history as the resident city of the House of Habsburg and later the capital of the Austro-Hungarian empire, Vienna today is famous for its high quality of life. The Viennese Coffee Culture is still celebrated in many “Kaffeehäuser” (coffee houses) throughout the city and visitors will always find the right place to enjoy a good “Achterl” of the famous Austrian Wine with typical Austrian/Viennese food. Vorarlberg

Vorarlberg is the westernmost federal state of Austria. It is the second-smallest area after Vienna, which is not only the Austrian Capital but also the smallest federal state. Vorarlberg borders three countries: Germany (Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg via Lake Constance), Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The only Austrian state that shares a border with Vorarlberg is Tyrol, which is to the east. The capital of Vorarlberg is the city of Bregenz famous for its Music festival. Vorarlberg is almost completely mountainous with a nickname the “Ländle” which means “small land” in German. WEINVIERTEL

The Austrian “Weinviertel” (Wine Quarter) is located in the North-East of Lower Austria not far away of the Austrian capital Vienna. The name Weinviertel is linked to the very important relation between this area and one of the main industries, Viniculture, found here. The Weinviertel is the largest wine growing area in Austria and famous for the typical Austrian “Heurigen” where everybody, locals and tourists, sit together and enjoy an “Achterl” in a typical Austrian and very cozy atmosphere with traditional Heurigen Food. Besides other famous grape varieties, the most important grape varieties grown in “Weinviertel” are Grüner Veltliner, Zweigelt and a not so well-known grape called Welsch-Riesling. On 153 km in a network of pilgrims ways, the so-called Way of Saint James Weinviertel, one can visit many different local vineyards by foot. The “Wine Road Weinviertel” winds itself from the Heldenberg near Ziersdorf in the “Westerly Weinviertel” via the “Veltliner Land” to the “Southerly Weinviertel with Hagenbrunn and Bisamberg.
